Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a natural healing method first taught by Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926) in Japan during the early 1920’s. Following a twenty-one day meditation and fast on Mount Kurama, north of Kyoto, Dr. Usui discovered that he could heal patients by simply touching them with his hands. Dr. Chujiro Hayashi (1879-1940) opened a clinic in Tokyo and codified Usui’s method. He began treating patients and training Reiki Masters. In 1935, Hawayo Takata (1900-1980) was treated at Hayashi’s clinic and stayed to learn the Reiki method of natural healing. She brought Reiki home with her to Hawaii and began training Reiki Masters in Usui’s tradition, continuing the Usui Shiki Ryoho lineage.
Reiki is a form of bodywork that provides relaxation and healing by channeling the universal life force energy that surrounds us. A Reiki practitioner, through the attunements received during training, is able to channel the Reiki energy to areas of the body that need healing. There is debate among Reiki practitioners about what exactly is the universal life force energy. .
Reiki can promote healing for any ailment. It works well for stress, anxiety, tension, pain and acute or chronic problems due to injury, illness and disease.
It can ease the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and help recovery from surgery. With emotional problems and depression it can bring things to the surface that can be recognized and resolved.
It is possible to benefit at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to improve very quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. Reiki can be given anywhere and at any time as no special equipment is needed. The practitioner is a channel which the energy is drawn through by the need or imbalance in the recipient. Neither person has to use any effort of will or concentration during this process.
Clients find that the level of relaxation reached is much deeper than anything they have felt before. Reiki restores the balance in one’s life.
A Reiki treatment is balancing at every level, it can help anyone who is interested to experience a treatment. If you are tired, you’ll feel refreshed. If you are anxious, you’ll feel serene, if you are distressed, you’ll feel comforted. Where you feel overwhelmed, you’ll find a renewed sense of yourself. And these subjective changes will be accompanied by physical changes indicative of deep relaxation, such as a slower heart rate and easier breathing.
Most people notice a difference after the first treatment, and the benefits grow with repeated sessions.
As running water smooths the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Some come to Reiki to develop spiritually and to experience a greater sense of meaning in life. Many have sought Reiki treatments or training realizing that balancing their mind, body and soul can help them to cope better with a wide range of health conditions, including:
The following are a few of the commonly reported benefits of a Reiki Treatment:
Reiki treatments are safe. Reiki treatments do not interfere with any medical care you are receiving, there are many case studies done in hospitals that show Reiki increases the benefits of medicines and other therapies being done by a medical doctor.
If you are taking prescriptions medications, please do not change the way you take your medications on your own.
Always consult your physician before adjusting your medications.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply lies or sits and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible.
We are alive because life force energy is flowing through us. Life force energy flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. Energy also flows around us in a field of energy referred to as the aura. Life force energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force energy is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life force energy is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force energy. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force energy to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Reiki is guided by the God-consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to create the effect that is appropriate for them. Because the practitioner is not doing the healing, it is also much easier for the ego to stay out of the way and allow the presence of God to clearly shine through. One never needs to worry about whether to receive Reiki or not. It is always helpful.
Because it is a channeled healing, the Reiki practitioner’s energies are never depleted. In fact, the Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and client to be in need of healing, so both receive treatment. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases one’s energy and leaves one surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.
